Vehicle Emissions

Facts regarding Canada’s vehicles and their emissions: Five things you probably didn’t know!
The environment is at the top of many discussions at dinner tables, around hockey rinks and between top politicians. Canada is moving toward environmentally-friendly vehicles, but it takes everyone’s input and help…remember a healthy car is a greener car. More frequent maintenance leads to lower emissions per vehicle. If your car is an older one, consider a new vehicle. Not only will you help the environment out, you’ll enjoy driving your new vehicle so much more!
Consider these five facts:
Clean auto technology is progressing so rapidly that a vehicle produced today is 12 times cleaner that one produced in 1993, 37 times cleaner than one produced in 1987 and a staggering 99 times cleaner than one built in 1970!
Less than 1% of Canada’s smog and greenhouse gas emissions come from this year’s new cars and light-duty trucks. Today, Canada’s 19 million passenger vehicles account for less than 13% of Canada’s total greenhouse gas emissions, and less than 10% of smog-causing emissions.
As a result of new clean auto technology, driving a new SUV from Ottawa to Vancouver and back creates fewer smog-causing emissions than painting a room with one 4-litre can of water-based paint!
Vehicles built now can run on clean fuels and renewable bio-fuels that can reduce your greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 64% compared to non-renewable gasoline, and there are currently 31 vehicle models available to Canadians that can sue E85 (85% Ethanol).
In 2005, Canada’s auto sector signed a voluntary agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 5.3 million tones by 2010.
