Language of the Gamer
Written by: Dan Shemley
Alright parents, for those that don’t speak it already, it’s time to learn the language gamers use both online and in real life. I figured there’s a great deal of people still unaware of this new and very exciting way of speaking.
Let’s start out lightly, with nerdy expressions. A lot of times playing online you don’t really have time to type full words, or even make sure you spelled things right. Here’s a quick list of “gamer terms” for you:
Pwn= to royally kick the butt of someone
Newb= Someone with very little experience in the game being played
Hax= Someone cheating
Those tend to show up the most in any games I’ve played. Now to harder stuff, leet speek. Using numbers as substitutes for certain letters creates some freak weird looking words. As seen below are the translations.
0=O
1=L
3=E
4=A
5=S
6=G
7=T
8=B
Looking at the numbers you can see a slight resemblance, hence the connections. Very often a good typer can use the numbers without much though to the process, which I find a little scary as it takes me a long time to punch in the number instead.
Gamers have developed this way to typing over a short period of time and most likely it will evolve the same way english has in the past. Fortunately you are now perpared to venture forth and communicate with gamers, prehaps even start a class teaching leet speek to other people so they may also understand what gamers say.
