Stepping It Up in 2011

I am in the business of “better”. Clients want to look better, portray themselves in a better light or brand and market their business better. What “better” time to step it up a notch than the start of a new year?

So how do you decide what it is you need to step up?

On a personal level, you might look at yourself as a whole and try to figure out where you could use some improvement or make some changes. These changes could be physical, mental, emotional, spiritual or even financial.

Professionally speaking, you could review your circumstances in a variety of ways. You could ask yourself how much effort you put into your job, think about the relationships you have with coworkers or clients or, my favorite, how much you love what you’re doing.

As a business owner, you might consider company productivity, balance sheets, existing marketing campaigns or even customer feedback for cues or ideas on where to make adjustments.

Now, evaluating what could be or needs to be stepped up isn’t always an easy task and can make some people extremely uncomfortable. Deciding that something or some area of yourself, your life or your business needs improvement suggests that a particular area or situation isn’t where it should be or maybe isn’t up to par. Some might see this for what it is (a simple fact) while others might view it as a failure of some sort or even leave them with a sense of inadequacy (which would defeat the purpose).

But isn’t taking the time to stop and analyze worth it? Perhaps instead of finding faults, you’ll find that things are better than you thought. Perhaps you’re exercising three times a week, eating well, giving it all at the office, have happy customers and your bank accounts and investments have never looked better.

And perhaps just by taking the time to review all these different areas of your personal and/or professional life you realize that you’re happy, healthy and productive and live a meaningful, full and balanced life.

On the other hand, if you do find yourself finding fault, lacking or find things that you’re not happy with or could use improvement then what are you waiting for? We only get one shot, one chance, one kick at the can. Why not make use of every day and every opportunity to live the best life we can possibly lead? Let’s make 2011 the year to step it up and make it our best year yet.
