Ports - Not related to ships

Ports are known in the gaming world as basically taking a game from one system and putting it on another. Granted the devolpers often add new features, such as enhanced graphics or new secrets.

In the past certain games were ported onto the playstation. Here I refer to Chrono Trigger, one of the best RPG’s to be released on the SNES. I give Squaresoft credit for the effort behind it, but a big smack to the head for the failure. The game had new anime cut scenes added at very random intervals. Unfortunately even die hard fans of the game were let down by abnormally long load times.

However, there is a shining light at the end of the tunnel. Square released a 20th anniversary collection for both Final Fantasy 1 and 2. Both games look incredible! The gameplay stays the same with only minor changes to the visual style. Upcoming later this year is the re-release of Star Ocean.

I look forward to this one very much as the flaws in the PS version made the game(though it maintains an A rating from me) a bit less than it could have been. Back when it was first released technological constraints limited the amount of ‘goodies’ the games creators could add. Very poorly recorded voice acting and a bit less than spectacular graphics engine should be fixed by the time the game comes out in either December or January.

Next time I will talk about the X-Box 360.
