Legend of Ogopogo

For hundreds of years there have been numerous reported sightings of the famous “Ogopogo”, which the Sylix referred to as “N-ha-a-itk”, a fierce lake monster that resided just south of Kelowna, near Peachland.

In 1924, a song celebrating the monster was composed, and it was given the name “Ogopogo.”

According to the “Legend Hunters,” native folklore specifically places the lair of the lake monster, which they called N-ha-a-itk, or lake demon, at a cave under Squally Point. Squally Point is near Rattlesnake Island, which is offshore from Peachland. The Sylix would never paddle a canoe near this area without an offering, because quite often a storm would spring up; legend had it that N-ha-a-itk would rise out of the waters to claim another life.

Most sightings have described Ogopogo as being green, with a snake-like body about 15 -25 meters long. Many have reported seeing two or more visible humps on its back, undulating slowly through the water.
